Known graphics bugs in Matlab

Displaying FEM results using ../help/feplotfeplot can be the source of a number of Matlab instabilities, while you are encouraged to report these to mailto:support@mathworks.comsupport@mathworks.com here are some indications

On windows, Matlab 6.5 is the most stable version. With Matlab 7.0 to 7.1 we have found problems with transparency (crash and display errors), and with the Copy Figure menu under 7.1.
On UNIX systems (LINUX, MAC, SunOS, ...), OpenGL rendering is often unstable (can lead to severe Matlab or system crashes).
When encountering crash problems, force SDT to use zbuffer rendering by putting the cingui('Renderer zbuffer default') command in your startup file. Also look at the Matlab opengl command for various options in rendering. Updating your graphics card driver can also be sufficient to solve some problems.
Failures of the Copy Figure are documented for Matlab 7, the solution proposed by the MathWorks is to use print commands

  print -opengl -dmeta
  print -zbuffer -dmeta
 
```
although this has been found to fail when running matlab -nojvm which is no longer needed under Matlab 7.
